Jam Buns.

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu!

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Does anyone else remember baking these in primary school?
I certainly do and so randomly, a few weeks back I remembered these jam buns and had the biggest craving for them.
A dig around the internet and I had a simple recipe to try out for a weekend treat.
The buns were just as I remember them. Soft in the middle but with crisp edges and of course, a sweet jam centre. They're also very easy to make which is probably why they were on the school baking syllabus and why they're perfect to bake with little ones on half-term break this week.

All you do is stir up a buttery dough. Portion it into twelve pieces and roll each one into balls. Press down in the middle to make a hole for the jam. Spoon in the jam and the buns are ready to bake.
Twelve minutes later, the buns are ready. We love them fresh but they are just as good the next day. Although, I have to admit that they don't last that long in our house. Enjoy!

A Simple List of Ingredients:
1. Self-Raising Flour
2. Salt
3. Butter
4. Caster Sugar
5. An Egg
6. Milk
7. Jam

Bismillah, let's begin!

First, pre-heat the oven to Gas Mark 7 or 220C. Grease and line a baking tray.

Grab a mixing bowl and let's stir up the dough. You can use any electric mixer but I made mine by hand.

Into the bowl, place 200g Self-Raising Flour and a Pinch of Salt.

Stir the two up!

Then, add in 100g Butter, cold and cubed.

Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour until the mixture looks like crumbs.

To sweeten everything up, throw in 100g Caster Sugar.

And, stir it in.

Beat 1 large Egg with a fork and pour it in.

Along with the last ingredient, 1 tablespoon Milk.

Now, we stir.

Once you have a rough dough, we can roll out the buns.

Divide the dough into 12 pieces and ....

... roll them into balls. Place them on the baking tray with space in between so they can spread.

Now, let's make the indent in the middle where the jam will go. Use your thumb to make a deep hole - not all the way through though!

Use your fingers to shape the hole. But don't worry, it doesn't have to be perfect.

Next, it's jam time!

I used Strawberry and Blackcurrant but feel free to use your favourite.

Let's fill in the holes.

I like to add about 1 teaspoon Jam per bun.

Once the buns have their jam, we can bake them!

Bake the buns for 10-12 minutes at Gas Mark 7 or 220C until golden brown.

Let the buns sit on the hot tray for 10 minutes.

Then, cool the buns on a wire rack until you're ready to eat.

The perfect treat for your next tea break!
