Baking with Kids!

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu!

Yesterday, I was joined in the kitchen by my niece and nephew. It was good fun and a bit chaotic at times! So, I thought I'd share some pictures of what we got up to. I kept the recipes extremely simple and quick - no need to get too complicated!

We started off by making the batter for the Vanilla Cupcakes.

My niece had great fun figuring out what to put in next!

They took turns mixing in the flour, and trying to avoid getting it all over themselves.

We baked half the mixture in these silicone cake moulds ..

.. and the other half, as normal cupcakes.

I've never used silicone moulds before so I was quite pleased as to how these turned out. They were in the shape of little castles, I think!

Once the cakes had cooled, it was onto decorating them. We made Chocolate Buttercream to ice them with.

The cupcakes were turned into butterfly buns.

And, as for the castle cakes, they were just spread with icing and dipped in sprinkles.

Next, it was the first recipe I (and probably you!) ever made - Chocolate Crispies.

A two ingredient classic - Milk Chocolate broken up into a large bowl.

We had to add extra since some little mouths kept eating them all.

The chocolate was then melted in the microwave.

Handfuls of Corn Flakes were added, a little at a time.

A few were munched in the process!

Once everything was mixed well ..

.. a tray was lined with paper cases.

And, then filled with the mixture.

These take about an hour to set completely depending on how cold the room is. You could add anything you like to these to personalise them - nuts, dried fruit, chocolate chips - anything!

Finally, we made Pizza Swirls. These were inspired by Husnaas' Pizza Pinwheels. Roll out 1 ball of Pizza Dough to 1/4 inch thick rectangle.

Pour on a few splashes of tomato passata.

Spread all over with the back of a spoon.

Add a few spoons of Keema. Or you could put sliced veggies like you would on a pizza, or you could keep it plain with just cheese.

Start spreading out the keema ..

.. until evenly distributed.

Now, the best bit, sprinkle on lots of grated Cheddar cheese.

Make sure it's evenly distributed.

Then, carefully, roll tightly like a Swiss Roll.

Using a large sharp knife, cut into slices.

Place onto a greased tray. Bake at Gas Mark 7 for 20 minutes.

While the Pizza Swirls baked, the kids busied themselves with papercraft and card making!

After 20 minutes, the Pizza Swirls are done!

Serve straight away!
